Newsletter Spring 2009

As you are probably aware, Specac manufactures and stocks the industry’s widest range of Lab IR accessories for solid, liquid and gas samples. Our fully integrated sampling solutions work at temperatures from -190°C to 800°C, at pressures from vacuum to 6000psi and under corrosive conditions that leave other manufacturers bewildered.
Our newsletter is here to keep you up to date with all the latest developments from our active development and manufacturing teams. As well as the latest special deals and offers (don't forget this issue's offers expire on 30.06.09). Our New Product Development team have developed a low-cost version of our holographic polarizer to complement our polarizer range. These are available on Barium Fluoride (BaF2), Calcium Fluoride (CaF2), KRS-5, and Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) substrates, and are manufactured at 2500 lines/mm to provide excellent polarization performance at an economical price. They are sold from stock, and are available in standard sizes of 25 mm or 50 mm diameter.
Common uses include: the polarization of radiation for unpolarized sources, attenuation of radiation from polarized sources, or acting as polarizing beamsplitters. Further applications include infrared spectroscopy of materials and NIR/Mid-IR thermal imaging, amongst others. These polarizers are offered in addition to Specac’s range of standard and high extinction ratio IR polarizers.![]()
Our New Product Development team have been busy creating the next evolution of one of our ATR products. Our Silver Gate is evolving into a new more versatile offering with the same great results. We will reveal more soon so keep an eye out for more information.
A US Government Agency selected Specac to supply an experimental sampling accessory because of its unique fusion-bonding of sapphire optics to structural metal materials. This and other technical innovations derive from Specac's corporate experience in designing and building IR sampling cells for High Pressure and High Temperature applications.
For this project, a 5ft long specially-designed High Pressure and High Temperature Cell was used to enable acquisition of raman spectral data from geological samples held at high temperature and pressure (460C, 1350 psi). Sapphire optical windows were engineered to withstand these physical conditions and to transmit intense incident radiation from a high-flux laser source.
6-inch diameter non-fluorescent sapphire windows were diffusion bonded to 12-inch diameter titanium housings on each end of the 5ft stainless steel pressure cell. No traditional seals or gaskets were used. The finished vessel included a burst disc, gauges, high pressure valves and connectors, and was pressure tested on certified test equipment at Specac UK to meet EU, UK and US pressure vessel cell standards.
The customer also purchased a Specac Atlas press and dies for preparing the geological samples.
This project is a perfect demonstration of the productivity of our experienced sales professionals working in concert with our scientific and engineering staff.
The Golden Gate is the world’s most versatile Infrared sampling system. It analyzes all sample types from hard solids to corrosive liquids and is fast, sensitive and robust.
Outstanding sensitivity is achieved using high pressure contact against a solid, type IIIa diamond, selected for its unparalleled sensitivity as a single reflection ATR element together with its unique physical and chemical stability. The accessory can be used to analyze a range of samples from single particles and fibers to corrosive liquids. While the large working area sample platform is ideal for macro sampling.
The diamond is high temperature bonded into its tungsten carbide mount, giving performance and strength to withstand the high pressures required for maximum optical contact with hard samples.
The quick lock and release bridge allows for fast sample change around. The built-in pressure control mechanism means reproducible results re obtainable and optimum sample clamping is achieved.
We are offering a Standard Golden Gate system for under £5,000 on orders placed before the end of June using the promotion code(SGG5).

At the end of 2008 one of our technical experts spent 10 days in China visiting a number of our existing customers and distributors there. This was a great help to our customers in China as Clive was able to train people on the finer points of our products face to face and help them install some of our more advanced equipment. It was a successful trip for all those involved.
If you’d like to receive training or a demonstration at your facility or visit us at our site in the UK, please contact us at reach@specac.co.uk.
We will be in Germany with L.O.T. for ACHEMA 2009 please come and see us. If you wish to arrange an appointment please contact Colin Robinson - colin.robinson@specac.co.uk.
Our fount of all knowledge and technical expert Clive Moss is always willing to help customers with their technical queries and issues. Clive can be contacted via the "Ask Clive" section of our website or by email clive.moss@specac.co.uk.
